Solution to a Square Puzzle from Amit
This morning, one of my old primary school classmate Amit Goel from Holy Angels Convent School, sent me a small puzzle on WhatsApp.
It was in the form of a picture asking me to tell as how many squares the image contained …. it went on to tease and provoke the reader saying that 92% of the people cannot get the correct answer. The image with the question was as below:
Naturally, I had no choice but to give him the solution with some explanation, which I did…. .. and then thought why not share it with you all visitors too 🙂 so here is the solution for any one interested …….

The correct simple Answer is 40 squares as below:
1 square for the outside border of the square grid (4×4)
4 squares that are 9/16th the entire size of the square grid (3×3)
9 squares that are 1/4th of the entire size of the square grid (2×2)
18 squares that are 1/16th of the entire size of the square grid (1×1)
; the 16 aligned in a grid plus the 2 that are overlaying the grid.
8 squares that are 1/64th of the entire size of the square grid (0.5×0.5)
, caused by the offset squares being bisected by the grid lines.
The individual squares in the above image are highlighted in a multi layered / animated gif image below:
